Jackson Zoo

Located in Jackson, Mississippi's Livingston Park, the Jackson Zoo provides the general public with the opportunity to experience a variety of wildlife in their natural habitats.

General Info

Jackson Zoo is one of the largest zoos in Mississippi and is the only zoo accredited by the Zoo and Aquarium Association. Almost all the animals in the zoo were born and bred at the zoo. Professional ethics preclude the trapping of wild animals simply for exploitation in a zoo setting. Animals are not trained in any way to perform for visitors. When you observe the animals at Jackson Zoo, you're seeing them living and behaving in perfectly natural ways.

Jackson Zoo has a variety of mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, and insects. Popular mammals at the zoo include the endangered Sumatran Tiger, Southern White Rhinoceros, and the Pygmy Hippopotamus. Some of the more unusual and interesting birds are the Ringed Teal, Great Horned Owl, and the Blue and Yellow Macaw. The zoo has a wide variety of venomous and non-venomous snakes as part of their reptile collection. You'll definitely want to see such unusual snakes as the Yellow Anaconda, the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake, and the King Snake.

Exhibits

Exhibits at Jackson zoo feature over 220 animals and more than 120 species. Exhibits are grouped into a number of areas, including the African Rainforest, African Savannah, and Wilderness Mississippi.

The African Rainforest allows you to immerse yourself in a dense, forested jungle. Here, you'll get to visit Chimpanzee Island, with its four resident chimpanzees, and the pygmy hippopotamus pool, where three pygmy hippoptamuses reside. Other popular exhibits in the Rainforest are the Diana monkeys exhibit and the red river hogs exhibit.

The African Savannah exhibit is designed in a way that makes you feel you're on an expedition in the the wide-open Savannah. The exhibit has numerous species of reptiles, birds, antelope, as well as other animals. It has a large field that allows the inhabitants to roam freely.

The Wilderness Mississippi exhibit houses some of Mississippi's most unusual species. Animals include a number of venomous snakes, mountain lions, and even black bears.

Exhibits can change, so it never hurts to call ahead if you're interested in a particular exhibit.

Current Hours
Sunday, and Thursday thru Saturday: 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM.
Tickets are sold until 2:45 PM.
Visitors are capped at 500/day.
Buying tickets online is highly encouraged.

Reviews

The staff is very nice and walk around talking to all the customers letting you know when snack times are for the different animals, or questions you might have. The animals look well cared for, the exhibits are kept up nice with plenty of things for enrichment time for them. I for one, want to go as much as possible with my granddaughter to help keep this zoo going. It would be such a shame to lose it because it's a place for a good family outing that has been opened for over 100 yrs! It was established in 1919.
